After-fins |
 |
 |

Why have we installed after-fins on the boat?
Up until now Adrien has shown a strong tendency to "head-up"
when travelling fast in a cross-wind. ("heading-up"
means that the boat has a tendency to turn towards the direction
of the wind).
To prevent her changing course, I was forced to use a lot of
helm, which is wearing on the helmsman and the automatic pilots.
To allow for this problem, I had to limit the speed by reducing
the sail area so that the automatic pilot could continue to
steer. This isn't very logical in a racing boat.
From now on, I will lower the leeward fin. It is angled at 6°
relative to the boat's axis. The more Adrien "heads-up",
the more I will lower the fin. This should greatly ease the
strain on the main rudder which will continue to steer the boat
but more easily than before.
